Frugal Food: Rice 2

rice Rice can be a very frugal food. But before you think that this food is plain and boring, take a look at this article. I’ll talk about how frugal rice really is, and how to spice it up a bit for family meals. Making rice a staple in your home can really save you money on your food budget, especially now.

This is part two of a two-part series.

Our next bag of rice is a 15-pound bag of white basmati rice. This rice is a bit more expensive. It’s creamy texture, long grain and exotic aroma make it ideal for side dishes. Plain or with a few added vegetables is the way that we enjoy it. I consider this rice to be a real treat.

Finally, we have another 25-pound bag of rice, although this one is standard white rice. We use it for stir fry dishes and to put under meals, such as a creamy crockpot chicken or home made baked beans.
Here are some more tips on using rice in different ways.

Just a little spice can change rice to an exotic dish. Try hot spices for a change of pace from average American cooking. I know of one family that serves a hot pepper with their white rice. They take a bite of the hot pepper and then eat the rice. See how many ways that you can season your rice.

Cream soups poured over rice with some added cooked chicken makes a quick an economical meal.

Desert doesn’t have to be all about sugar and flour. Why not create a rice pudding?

Enhance your rice with creamy coconut milk for an exotic taste that is great for Asian dishes.

The USA Rice Foundation has a website listing tons of interesting recipes using rice. Check them out at http://www.menurice.com/Recipes_and_Culinary_Center/Recipes/
