Whenever Valentines Day approaches, so do those cute little conversation hearts. You know the ones. The brightly colored necco candy with the quirky sayings such as “Sweet Talk” and “Love Me.”
I can remember exchanging them with my friends when we were school girls. We never gave any to the boys, although we might leave one or two anonymously on a desk for a boy we had a crush on. Easily embarrassed, we always ate the really mushy-sounding ones that had the word “love” or “luv” in them. We did this while making goofy faces, of course. Ones that said “hugs” were perfectly okay to give and trade.
Necco produces about 100,000 hearts a day, from late February to mid-January the year before they need them (so yes, your hearts are at least a year old). They have to do this in order to meet demand for the Valentines holiday. According to the company, all of those conversation hearts sell out in a mere six weeks.
Those hearts have been mass manufactured since the 1902s, if you can believe it. Over the years, the sayings have changed to include such modern versions, such as “Fax Me.” Every year new sayings are born and others are retired.
Well, I think frugality should be honored on these conversation hearts. More and more people are adopting a frugal lifestyle, so why not reflect that fact? So, here are some of my picks for new conversation heart suggestions.
