Want to get quality furniture for less or even for free? If so, you’ll want to read this post!
Moving to a larger home, we were in some serious need of furniture. Did you know that the average room costs between $2,000 and $5,000 to furnish? Well, that is just plain unacceptable in my frugal world (not to mention impossible). Here are some tips on getting frugal furniture without going cheap.
My biggest piece of advice for you with frugal furniture is to take your time. Obtain your pieces one at a time and when they become available and affordable. Buying a complete set of something is often very expensive, and matchy-matchy pieces are out these days in terms of home furniture. Take a deep breath and live with a room that isn’t completely done all at once. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have a plan, but that you should allow time to get what you want for the price that you want. In the end, you’ll wind up with a great room that is filled with things that are better than you would have gotten all at once.
Take a look at home and design magazines and figure out how you want to finish your room. Catalogs are another good source of inspiration, since rooms are staged well to show off merchandise. I have frequently made or found designer pieces for a fraction of the catalog cost.
My next piece of advice is to think unconventionally and keep your eyes open to what might be around you. Stay away from traditional furniture stores, unless you are there to ask about purchasing floor models or clearance items. There are so many places to find furniture at a discount. Frequent stores that you love and ask about clearance and overstocks.
Check back again. I’ll share a lot of great places for inexpensive or free furniture.
