As the weather gets warmer and you start planning for guests and parties, you may be wondering if your home needs a quick update. Without spending much money (or even any in some cases), you can update your home and give it a new look. Here is how.
Raid the whole house
Shop in your own home first. You might find some things that would go better in a different room, or create an impact if they were arranged near each other. This is the first step that many decorators do. The look around for what the client may already have in her home and then use those items to their advantage. Just because you have always put the candle centerpiece on the dining room table doesn’t mean that it can’t go on the family room mantle, for example.
Use paint
Paint can be very inexpensive and it is the fastest way to get a new look. If you want to save even more money, try dome of these tips. check freecycle.org. People usually have plenty of different paint to give away. Another tip is to check with your local paint or home improvement store for returns. These are cans of paint that someone had second thoughts about and returned. I once found a few cans of white paint this way, as well as some bright colors that would work well for a child’s room or even for painting furniture.
Curb and Thrift Shop
Another man’s trash…Remember the shabby chic movement? You would be surprised how well a discarded item can look in your home if you have some creativity. What about using a piece of wood or wrought iron fence as a wall decoration? A dresser can be painted or finished and new knobs added. Lampshades can be changed, a kitchen cabinet can be turned into a desk and an old window into a mirror. Get creative.
