Did you know that you can save money even when it comes to your pets? Here is a roundup of ideas that you can use to make Fido and Fluffy very frugal.
Forget buying those expensive cat scratching trees and condos. I haven’t met a cat yet that will use them more than once. Instead, pick up some free carpet samples at your local hardware store or carpet center. Many times they will give you the samples for free. You can also buy small sample-sized rugs at home improvement stores for just a few dollars. Spread them around your home. Cats love these carpet pieces, and it may prevent them from scratching your real carpet or furniture.
You can make a free dog collar from one of your own belts. Whether you have a belt that has worn out or one that has ben outgrown, don’t throw it away. Instead, cut it down to size and add new holes with an awl for a virtually instant dog collar.
Instead of expensive cat pan liners, use paper grocery bags. The bags can be easily cut to size (if needed). They are also very absorbent, and they resist the tearing that the regular pan liners fall victim to. Best of all, they are free, every time you go shopping.
You might think about buying cat food to feed a dog because it can be less expensive. But don’t fall into this trap. The cat food isn’t formulated for a dog and its digestive system. You could wind up at the vet or animal hospital facing some expensive vet bills.
Don’t buy pet medications at the vet if you can avoid it. There is a definite mark up on these medications. You can purchase them elsewhere, such as online, at a good pet shop or from the manufacturer. In most states, it is legal to administer even shots to your pets, but check first.
