Frugal Kids: Free Home Depot Workshops

home depot Looking for something fun and frugal on a Saturday? Why not try a free Home Depot Workshop?

If you have a child like mine who loves to build or do crafts, you’ll love the Home Depot Workshops. They are a great way to give your child the opportunity to participate in these pint-sized “How-to Clinics.” These clinics are designed specifically for kids from ages 5 through 12, and are offered on the first Saturday of each month. There is absolutely no cost, and kids can drop in anytime between 9 a.m. and noon. An adult will need to bring the child and stay with him or her for the entire length of the workshop.

During the workshops, kids construct their projects from pre-fabricated kits that are designed to be educational, teaching kids about science, nature, history and of course the practical skills in building the projects. Sample projects include birdhouses, window-boxes complete with flowers, toy vehicles and more.

The workshops really emphasize tool safety and do-it-yourself confidence. The kids build their self esteem and confidence at their accomplishments. My son loves these workshops so much that they inspire him to be extra good when he knows a clinic is going to be offered. I like the quality time he gets to spend with either myself or my husband during the workshop. With two other siblings, that one-on-one time is a savored commodity. This would also be a great activity for grandparents and grandkids to do together.

Another nice thing about the workshops is that each kid gets his or her very own orange Home Depot apron and an achievement pin. The kids can take the apron and pin home with them, and that is a big plus in their eyes.
