Frugal Living Week in Review: February 18th Through February 24th

Did you know that you can make your own butter in a bread machine? I found that information out this week from one of our readers here in the Frugal Blog. Isn’t that amazing? Inspired by that bit, I did some research on an easy way to make your own yogurt. Both ideas will save you money. There were lots of other ideas too, last week. Check them out!

Saving Money on Prescriptions

Have you noticed how expensive prescriptions are getting these days? I’m not sure how anyone can really afford them. I keep saying it, but it is true. Fortunately, there are a couple of tricks that you can use to save money on prescriptions. Here they are.

Frugal Living Week in Review: February 11th Through February 17th

As usual, the Frugal Blog has been packed with all sorts of frugal ideas. I love discovering new ways of saving money. Of course, sometimes we can go too far, can’t we? I would love to hear all of your favorite ways to save money. Hmm, that sounds like a good excuse for a contest to come here soon. You heard it first!

Frugal Breakfast Plan

In spite of my sometimes best intentions not getting all the way to fruition, I really do try to make a home made breakfast for my family. Not only is it a nutritious practice, but it is also very frugal. Pound for pound, those easy already prepared breakfasts are some of the most expensive meals around. Cereal can cost $4 for a box that lasts one or two days at the most. And frozen breakfast meals are even worse.

Make Your Own Frugal Hot Oil Treatment

If you are old enough to remember the 80s, then you also remember the era of big, fluffy hair. I, unfortunately, was born with very straight, fine hair. This is something that can be an asset now, but it certainly wasn’t back then. Since that was the case, I have to admit, I had my hair permed once or twice in an effort to give it that classic 80s hairdo. Yeah, yeah, I know, that was so awful back then, wasn’t it?

Save Money on Butter

Butter can be one of the most expensive staples in the refrigerator. we tend to use a lot of butter in our household, so much so that we have labeled ourselves the “Buttertons,” just as in that margarine commercial. We eat pretty healthy elsewhere and are of a good weight, so I am not yet too concerned about the extra fat and calories of butter. I am concerned, however, at the increasing cost of butter. So here are some ways I am trying to save on butter.

Make Your Own Yogurt

Yesterday’s blog on saving money on butter sparked a great discussion. In it, I learned that you can make your own butter using a breadmaker. I had never heard of this technique before. This is one of the reasons I really love being a part of Families.com, because the members here are so clever and kind.

The Smelly Home Conspiracy

There is a huge market out there for home fragrance products, all of them vying for your hard earned money. The advertisements seems to tell you that if you don’t buy all of this stuff, your home will smell and you won’t have any friends. If your child’s room doesn’t smell like the scent of pineapple or a summer breeze, then you must be a bad parent. And only dirty housekeepers don’t have a home that smells like a fresh lemon or a spring day. Out of the good of their hearts, they will even give their little machines away, so you can be saved from embarrassment (of course, you have to pay for all of the refills yourself).

Frugal Fire Starters

During the week, I try to pick up lots of twigs around the yard to use as kindling for our fireplace. While we mostly use the fireplace as amusement, some day, we may want to fit it to be used as an alternative source of heat for our home.
