Frugal Memorial Day Ideas

america sign Let’s take a little break from Paperback Swap to talk about fun weekend plans. Are you ready to celebrate Memorial Day? Face it, food is getting expensive, but you can still have a great BBQ or other fun time to celebrate without spending a fortune! Here are some ideas.

Take advantage of local celebrations. Just doing a little bit of research in my area, I’ve located three Memorial Day parades, two free carnivals, a free cook out for town residents, two Memorial Day events at veterans cemeteries, and numerous pancake breakfasts. There are also other celebrations, such as a children’s program at the library and another one at the mall. Imagine all of the possible events in your region that you can attend for free or for a very low cost.

Create your own memorial celebration. Make paper flags or flowers and bring them to a cemetery or memorial to show your gratitude for those who have given themselves for our country.

For your own cookout, first take a look at the sales at your grocery store. Food is usually always cheaper when made from scratch. This time of year, the stores try to outdo themselves with the BBQ deals, since Memorial Day is the first launch of the summer grilling and picnic season. You’ll find deals on hot dogs, buns, hamburgers, ribs, fixings for cole slaw, Jello, mustard, ketchup, etc. Stay away from expensive gourmet foods or add ons that aren’t on sale, such as fancy cakes, produce and decorations. Make your own cupcakes.

For decorations, hop on over to your local dollar store. There will be plenty of great stuff to be had for nothing. Better yet, keep everything simple with plain balloons which can be had by the gross for not much money at all.
