Frugal Pirate Party Favor

pirate Guess what I am doing right now? Okay, besides typing this up to you of course. In between sentences, I am doing something else. I’ll give you a hint. My son’s birthday party is this Saturday. Okay, so I know that I blew the surprise in the title of the blog. But humor me. I’ve been going crazy trying to plan out a wonderful kid’s pirate party for as little money as possible.

These kids parties can get expensive, can’t they? You may remember an earlier article entitled Frugal Kids Parties: Ways to Save. Using some of those techniques have really helped a lot. But I still need a bunch of favors. One idea that my son and I came up with is kind of fun, although I must confess that it is so easy, that you may have already seen it somewhere before. But our technique seems to be producing some great favors with minimal mess. This favor is for pirate telescope (I know they are called something else, but my chocolate-starved brain is drawing a blank at the moment).

My son helped make about half of them, but then he had to go off to his afternoon Kindergarten, the little stinker, leaving me to make the rest.

First I gathered up all sorts of paper towel and toilet paper tubes. Well, all of the tubes that we weren’t using for other uses (click here for household ideas). We are covering them in black construction paper, using white glue and a couple of rubber bands to hold the paper on until it dries. Next, we cut squares of plastic wrap and cover one end of each scope, using a rubber band to secure it. A strip of yellow construction paper is then glued on over the rubber band to hide it and to add a nice decorative touch. When everything is dry, the extra rubber bands that were put on in the first step will be removed.

I’m sure the kids will have a lot of fun with their scopes, and all it cost us was a little bit of construction paper and glue, items that we already had around the house.
