My name is Nicole and I have an obsession with seashells. I really am addicted, and the bigger ones are always my favorites. However, I also adore those tiny little ones that you can barely see, so perfectly formed. I have hundreds in craft containers in my basement of all shapes, types and sizes. Our bedroom has a very sea-like theme and I am always on the lookout for new ideas.
This one was the most fun. I was staring at my seashell containers one day, and decided I really need to do something with some of them. I began looking at them and found tons of scalloped seashells. They are my favorites for making candle holders, or soap dishes, but I have those already and I want something different. We were working on the lighting in the room at the time. We wanted to purchase a lampshade and glue seashells to it, but I didn’t really like the look of that. When it hit me. I could make my own seashell lights, and that is exactly what I did.
I dug around our Christmas box for some Christmas lights. I was adamant that I stick with the soft color scheme in my room so the dark green wire lights were not an option. I had several packages of white ones with clear bulbs so that is what I used, but either would be fine.
Take the shells, Christmas lights and a glue gun, and get to work. First, I added some glue to the inside of each scallop shell. (the scalloped ones work better, but this does work with other types). Next, take the base of the light (the piece that the light bulb inserts into) and press it down firmly into the glue. Hold it in place several seconds to ensure that it sticks. Continue doing this until you have glued all of the lights into the shells. Now your options are endless. You can hang them in your bedroom around the top border, you can drape them over curtains or place around the edge of a dresser. All you need is an extension cord to plug them in, but I recommend starting the lights near a light socket to ensure that you cannot see the extra cord. It looks fabulous, and I love having those lights on, all by themselves. It is such a romantic lighting option and it cost me absolutely nothing because I had everything for it already.
We also made one to string in our master bathroom over the mirror, though hiding that extension cord didn’t work as well.
If you aren’t a seashell buff like me, consider using another object you have lots of, just avoid paper or wood which are fire hazards. Enjoy!
