Use these frugal solutions in the bath for the smoothest most hydrated skin.
The winter, with its dry air and exposure to indoor heating really wrecks havoc on skin, turning it dry, irritated and even cracked and bleeding. It is important to get your dry skin under control and help it start its healing process.
Creams and lotions often make the situation worse, especially if you are trying to save money. That is because most lotions contain alcohol, and alcohol dries skin! This is true even on most of the the expensive designer moisturizers. Go ahead and look at those lotion labels, and you will see what I am talking about. The cheaper lotions are usually watered down, and that doesn’t help your skin much. What does help is fat.
Fat helps your skin lock in moisture and prevent it from escaping. it also lubricates your skin to make it more supple. So, you can basically look around your house for cheap sources of fat.
I mentioned in an earlier blog, that shortening is a great solution for dry, chapped lips. You can use it elsewhere, on your body, if you like, but that isn’t too appealing, at least to me. Yes, even something like butter will work, but you might not want to walk around smelling like buttered popcorn.
One of the best frugal solutions for dry skin that involves fat is olive oil. You don’t need the most expensive extra virgin olive oil either. Add a few tablespoons of olive oil to your bath water, and you will emerge soft. If you prefer taking showers, simply rub the oil onto your skin as soon as you emerge to lock in the moisture.
Another great frugal solution to sooth dry irritated skin is powdered milk. You have heard of expensive milk baths, right? Well this one is not so expensive, and it works really well. Milk, with its sugars and proteins, softens and can feed your skin to sooth it and help it heal. Just mix about a half a cup of powdered milk into your bathwater and soak away!
