If you want the spa look and the spa feel without the spa price, then read this series! I’ll be sharing lots of great solutions that you can use for so much less than a visit to the spa. These solutions are all natural, so they are really great for you, too. I’ve been inspired by Body & Soul Magazine (wholeliving.com) and have adapted many of their suggestions for frugal pampering.
Most homes have chamomile tea, or at least it is one of the brands of tea that are relatively common and inexpensive as far as teas go at the supermarket. You can also use chamomile tea as a natural anti-inflammatory for your skin. So if you wake up with puffy eyes and irritated skin, just reach into your cupboard.
Steep a bag of chamomile until the tea is a golden yellow. Cool the tea. Soak a washcloth into the cool tea and then use it as a compress on your skin. If you just want to treat your eyes, you can roll the washcloth up into a sort of eye pillow. Then lay back and play the rolled washcloth over your eyes for at least 10 minutes. You can play some soothing music at the same time to really get that relaxing spa treatment. To be even more frugal, steep enough tea from one bag for a few treatments and store it in the fridge. Be sure to use it within a day or two, though.
I just love olive oil as a natural moisturizer. If I cook with olive oil and have just a drip or so left in the cup, I spread it over my hands in the winter. You can also use olive oil for a hair conditioner. Olive oil is rich in vitamin E and other fatty acids. Use light olive oil (no need for the more expensive virgin olive oil) and comb it through your hair before you shower. Cover your hair with a cap and let the natural heat from your body work on the oil for five to seven minutes. The magazine article suggests doing this in the shower, and then removing the cap to shampoo.
