I’ve been recently talking about the frugal temptations that we faced on last week’s visit to the grocery store. Shopping at the grocery store is always an adventure, especially when we do it all together, me, my husband and our three young children. My eldest, who is six, is starting to get the lessons of living frugally, and he had to face his own temptation in the form of a “cool” new shake and pour pancake mix. You can read all about that temptation and how he handled it by clicking here: Frugal Temptations.
As I mentioned at the end of that blog, I had my own temptations to face. The first came in the form of some pre-made pizzas at the deli section. I had just placed my order for lunch meat when I spotted a big Buy One Get One Free! sign next to those homemade pizzas. Each pizza was $5.99, so I could get two for that price. I knew that were were having friends over for a pizza dinner the next night, so the temptation was fierce. For $11, I could have four pizza already made. I reminded myself that making my own four pizzas would only cost about $5 total, and I made it through that one!
My next temptation came when I slipped off to the clearance section. Sometimes I can find some great buys there, such as boxes of cereal and instant oatmeal that are pennies a serving. I spotted some pumpkin no bake desert mixes that were marked down to .94 cents. They would really save time! Of course, the portion size was tiny, so I would probably have to make two at a time for one family desert. For about $2.56 or 72 cents more than two mixes, I could make two large pumpkin pies that would serve us for three days of desert and would not be loaded with all of the chemicals present in the mix. I also didn’t calculate for the milk needed for the mix, so the savings may have been even more than I listed here.
Have you faced any grocery temptations lately?
