Frugal Uses for Leftovers

Leftovers are a fact of life in most families. When you finish a meal, often there are things that can be claimed as leftovers. And I wouldn’t be surprised if there are even some food items that can be saved that you hadn’t even thought of before. This is the start of a new series on leftovers and ways to use them. I will cover everything from chicken and ham to noodles, steak and potatoes. Using leftovers to cook and create new meals, is a truly easy way to save money. That I can guarantee.

I have almost become obsessed with leftovers lately. I simply cannot stand to throw food away. It’s so wasteful and beyond wasting food, I also see it as wasting money. My frugal lifestyle makes it impossible for me to do that. However, I was faced with the problem of my kids actually despising leftovers. So I had to be creative and innovative and find some new ways to use all these leftovers we wind up with.

We are a family of seven so we cook a lot of food anyway. Four nights a week, my significant other works, so those nights I always make extra food so he has food to take into work the next night – he doesn’t mind leftovers. But the kids do, and we always seem to wind up with more food than originally intended anyway. I can never be sure how much they will eat.

Each night, I find myself staring at pots and pans of food, that although could be a meal in themselves, don’t taste as good warmed up, so I needed to figure out how to create new meals with those items, rather than just reheating chicken breasts or pasta noodles that we had made the evening before. Nobody likes eating the same thing twice in a row, at least not in my family.

For the rest of the week, as well as next week, I will be adding articles on new uses for different types of foods that are leftover. Watch the frugal living blog for these articles, or look for more ways to save money on food by checking out the Frugal Living Food Section.
