Frugal Valentine’s Day Fun For Kids (1)

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, and the excitement in the air that always happens when a holiday approaches and you have kids, it is time to start thinking of some special activities to do with the kids. Valentine’s Day is about those we love and our children are tops on that list. So why not have some fun with them and try out some of these ideas.

Look It Up – The very first thing I would suggest, is here because I was a teacher. It is the teacher in me who thinks it is important for children to understand why we celebrate holidays, and where the symbols we associate with those holidays came from. Go to the library and check out a book or two, or simply look it up online and learn why we celebrate this holiday and what it originally meant. You might be surprised.

Host a Party – So not a frugal suggestion you’re thinking? It can be and it can be loads of fun. Invite a couple of children to your Valentine’s party requesting that each child bring an ingredient to make cookies. Mix everything together. Then using cooking cutters, shape the dough, bake and decorate. Play pin the arrow on the heart or pin the smile on cupid or whatever. Make Valentine’s Card holders out of a shoe box that each child brings and more. You can have tons of fun for not a lot of money.

Love Collage – Create a love collage together. Using a giant piece of construction paper or even poster board, glue pictures of the people you love, and then write lists of things you love about them. It is important for children to learn to love people and this is a great activity to reinforce it.

Valentine’s Day Cards – Create Your own. Grab paper and scissors and some stickers, buttons, rubber stamps, ribbon strands and anything else you can find and just go to town making your own Valentine’s Day cards. These can be made for classmates, teachers or just family members, but create them together.
