Frugal Wedding Idea: A Cake that Doubles as a Centerpiece

I married my college sweetheart a few years after we graduated. We were still paying our student loans and money was tight. Since we both had started our careers, we didn’t feel comfortable asking our parents to help fund a lavish wedding. Thankfully, my husband and I both treat frugality as a sport and our wedding was the first (and biggest) challenge of all.

I love decorating and I’ve always had an eye for design. That’s why finding affordable (yet attractive) table decor at my wedding became so frustrating. As I priced candles, vases and florals for dozens of tables, I wanted to cry. I couldn’t believe how expensive a pretty table could be.

As I was venting my frustration with my cake designer, she gave me a wonderful idea. “Why don’t I make a few dozen small cakes for each table and a special two-tired one for the head table?” “The cakes would make beautiful centerpieces”, she suggested.

She was right. My wedding took place in the fall so we spread some raffia, fall leaves and small branches down each table. In the middle of each table was a gorgeous cake decorated with fall colored florals and grape vines.

We spent the same amount of money that we would have spent anyway on a larger, fancier cake while saving a small fortune on our table décor. Not to mention that my guests loved having personal cakes at each table. They served one another rather than standing in line. I also enjoyed having a personal cake for my husband and I that we happily mashed in each other’s faces.
