Here comes yet another great Fudge Book from Judy Blume. In “Fudge-a-Mania,” it is the summer before Peter’s sixth grade year and the Hatchers have moved back to New York City after spending a year in Princeton, New Jersey. Peter’s parents announce that they will be spending a few weeks near the end of the summer at a house in Maine. But when he finds out that their vacation house is going to be right next door to the family of his nemesis, Sheila Tubman, Peter’s vacation may very well be ruined!
Sheila Tubman is a total nuisance! From the moment Peter and his family arrive at the house in Maine, Sheila is annoying Peter. First, she freaks out and nearly falls from the rope swing in the front yard when Peter’s dog Turtle comes dashing out of the car. Yet Peter is surprised when he finds out that she has a puppy of her own! What is Sheila’s problem with Turtle if she has her own dog? Then, when Sheila finds out that Peter’s best friend Jimmy Fargo is coming to stay with them, she announces that as “the worst news of the century!” The worst part of Sheila being around is that she convinces Mrs. Hatcher to pay her to babysit Fudge during their vacation. Then she expects Peter to help her without splitting the money!
Peter goes through all sorts of mayhem during his vacation in Maine. He gets dizzy when he falls for a girl working at the library. Fudge jokes around about it the rest of the trip! Then he finds out that the grandfather of Fudge’s new playmate Mitzi is a famous retired baseball player. There is a community baseball game held every Sunday in which he bats for both teams. Peter wants so badly to impress him, but will it work? Or will Peter be humiliated in front of his idol?
“Fudge-a-Mania” is another fun, exciting story about the Hatcher family. With havoc created by Sheila, meeting exciting new neighbors, and even a surprise wedding near the end of the book, “Fudge-a-mania” will have you and your child on the edge of your seats just waiting to see what crazy thing will happen next!
