Why buy a pre-decorated cake when you and your kids can have fun making one together and add your own special touches? While most of the ideas I’ll share are fairly simple, they turn out really cute. You and your children will not only be making cakes, you will also be making memories.
Horse Cakes
*Makes two horses.
Mix up your favorite cake recipe or a boxed cake mix following the package directions. Pour the batter equally into two round layer pans and bake as directed.
Mix up some sugar cookie dough or purchase ready to use dough. Make two large round cookies, four small round cookies, and four triangle shaped cookies.
Frost the cake layers. You will need another color of frosting for accents, so you can either make two separate batches of frosting, or reserve some to add color too.
Frost the large round cookies using a contrasting frosting color. Frost two triangle cookies to match each cake layer. Frost all four small round cookies with white frosting.
Place a large round cookie at the bottom edge in the center of each cake to make the snout. Use cake decorating gel or Mini M & M’s for nostrils.
Add two small round cookies, evenly spaced, a couple of inches from the top edge of the cake to make eyes. Place dots of cake decorating gel or Mini M&M’s or other colored candies in the center of the small cookies to make irises.
Add the triangle cookies to the top edge of the cake, allowing them to overhand the edge a bit. These are the horse’s ears.
Between the ears add short strips of licorice whips or make curved lines with piping gel to make a mane.
NOTE: I used Jiffy cake mix which makes one layer per box, so I could make one vanilla and one chocolate cake. I also used Jiffy frosting and frosted one cake with chocolate and one with vanilla, reserving a little of each type of frosting for accents. You can also use white frosting and add food coloring for colorful horses instead of going with brown and white.
Variation:
To make a unicorn instead of a horse frost a pointy, waffle-style ice cream cone and place it upside down in the center of the cake just above the horse’s eyes.
