Fun, Custom Touches for Gift Wrapping

Try these ideas to make your packages even more special:

Candy Toppers

While a candy cane makes a cute gift topper, I think you’ll like this idea (and I’m pretty sure your kids will too). Take a “fun size” bag of M&M’s, Skittles, or other favorite candies that come in small bags. Push the candies to either side, pinching the middle. Tie a ribbon around the middle, and curl the ends. The package turns into the shape of a bow and adds a little something extra to your package. Many candies are available in holiday packaging, but even regular packaging will do. This idea can be used for gifts any time, but Skittles are great for Christmas with their bright red package.

*For bigger bows, follow the directions above and secure two of three bags together with ribbon, turning each one to create a “flower” shape. These get a little heavy, so be sure to attach them to packages securely.

Buck a Bow

Take a dollar bill (or any denomination you like) and fold it in half. Holding it lengthwise while folded in half, begin folding over, under, like you would to make a paper fan. When you’re done folding, pinch the center and tie with ribbon. Fluff the folds of your “bow” and secure the ribbon to the package (try to avoid getting tape on the dollar so it doesn’t tear). Most kids enjoy getting money, so this is a pretty cool way to make a gift stand out. Also, attaching several money bows is a great way to add to a small gift that you don’t feel is quite enough.

*Instead of simply giving cash or sticking it in a money holder card, you can pick up a small gift and use dollars as wrapping paper. Spread out a piece of colored cellophane (or even clear kitchen plastic wrap) large enough to wrap the gift. Cover with dollar bills. Top with another piece of cellophane, smooth until taut, and tape the edges together. Carefully wrap the gift, making sure tape only sticks to cellophane. You might want to wrap the gift in tissue paper first, so it cannot be seen through any spaces between dollars.
