Fun Find: Unifix Cubes

The other day I went to the educational store. My wallet trembles as I walk through the doors. I promised myself I would stick to my list. Alas, I went into the education store with a short list yet still came out with a long receipt.
What are Unifx Cubes?
Unifix cubes are interlocking colorful cubes that help children learn number and math concepts. Recommended for ages 4 and up. I use them with my 3 year old and she loves them. You can use the cubes for many different concepts.
Try using the Unifix Cubes for:

patterning

grouping

sorting

counting

numbers

addition

subtraction

multiplication

division

measurement

What we think of Unifix Cubes:

I love math manipulatives. Is that strange? Before I purchased the Unifix Cubes, my favorite math manipulative was counting bears. Who doesn’t love counting bears? Through a decade of homeschooling, I have used counting bears. After brining home the Unifix Cubes, I have changed my mind. Of course, counting bears are near to my heart. However, the versatility and use over time with the Unifix Cubes wins out.

My six year old uses the cubes for place value, measurement, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. While she is not officially on multiplication and division, the cubes are making the concept manageable for her to learn. It is amazing to me how fast she can learn just using little blocks.
My three year old uses the blocks for patterns, measurement, sorting, and counting. She watches her sister and has surprised me with some mad addition skills. That is the wonderful thing about Unifix Cubes, you can teach advanced concepts easily.

So, that’s my math manipulative recommendation. Unifix Cubes have been around for quite some time but until the other day, I have never purchased a set. I am much happier about the purchase than my wallet.
