Fun Fondue Recipes

In one of Shauna’s recent posts, “Crazy Fun Fruit Dessert” she gave a great idea for getting your kids to try new and different fruits. It’s not only crazy fun, but crazy healthy. I thought I’d add my take on getting my kids to eat fruit, but fair warning, adding chocolate to the mix is not quite as healthy. But it does get them to eat fruit when normally they are reluctant. (My lectures on the benefits of fiber apparently aren’t nearly as motivating as chocolate.)

You can make chocolate fondue in a fondue pot, but it’s not necessary. If you do have a fondue pot, you’ll want to set it at the lowest setting, because chocolate has a low melting point.

If you don’t have a fondue pot, you can make it stovetop in a double boiler or in the microwave.

My sister gave me a fondue pot for Christmas. I asked her for her family’s favorite recipe, and she said this is the hands-down favorite. And boy, she wasn’t kidding. This is heavenly.

Chocolate Fondue:
1 large milk chocolate bar
1 large dark chocolate bar
1 cup whipping cream (not whipped)

Melt everything on the low setting of the fondue pot, or in a double boiler. To make this in the microwave, melt the chocolate carefully in one-minute or 30-second intervals, stirring between each one. Heat it until the chocolate is almost, but not completely melted. Stir in the cream and heat maybe 30 more seconds. Stir until smooth.

The favorites for dipping were: mandarin oranges, maraschino cherries, strawberries, bananas and pineapple. Non-fruit favorites were chunks of angel food cake, marshmallows and vanilla wafers.

Here is another great fondue recipe–if you like peanut butter cups, this one is for you!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Fondue:

1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
3/4 cup peanut butter
2 Tablespoons butter
2 Tablespoons sour cream

Use the same directions as above. Try graham crackers and apples with this dip.
