Fun, Frugal Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day

Wouldn’t it be fun to frugally celebrate Valentine’s Day? Forget the $12 boxes of chocolate from the drugstore or the $45 flowers from the florist. Instead, celebrate with some great ideas that will put you in the mood but won’t add to your expenses.

In the Kitchen

Have the family create a wonderful way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with something full of love from the kitchen. Roll out pizza dough to form a heart shaped pizza and add your favorite toppings. Serve heart shaped chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast and make heart shaped sugar cookies. Basically, any food that you can shape into the form of a heart qualifies to help make the day special.

In the Bedroom

Now is the time to hunt through the house for all of those candles that have been gathering dust. Wait for the kids to go to bed and light them around the room to set the mood. Soft music from your iPod or radio will do wonders to make things romantic (and hide any um noises). Freshly laundered bedding, a sweet snack and a bottle of water (or wine) will complete the picture. No need for fancy and expensive lingerie or a $300 a night hotel room and babysitters.

Going Out

Sometimes the most romantic thing you can do as a couple is to take the time to talk. A simple meal out often provides this chance. Many local restaurants will offer specials for Valentine’s Day, so do your research to save money. Or, opt for something fun that doesn’t require cash, such as borrowing a telescope and exploring the stars, taking in a free concert (check local high schools and community centers) or hunting through all of your various coupons for a free game of bowling or other free activities.
