Surviving in a home without electricity or heat for days on end is no laughing matter. Unfortunately, that’s the scenario hundreds of thousands of residents battered by Superstorm Sandy are experiencing right now. Their misery is far from fun, still that’s not stopping relief workers from trying to make life a bit better for the youngest victims.
Last night, I saw a piece on CNN that showed volunteers providing kids affected by the storm with games, toys and crafts that they could play with despite their homes being without power. The effort was designed to create a momentary distraction for the children and help them have a little fun in the midst of an unfortunate situation.
The story serves as a reminder that there are affordable ways to keep kids occupied even when the power is out or you simply want them to unplug for the day. The next time you want to have fun in the dark consider the following:
Flashlight Tag: This classic game is a cinch to play. All you need is a flashlight for each player. Next, select a person to be “It.” That person must then tag another player by shining his flashlight on him or her. To make the game more challenging, have the other players turn off their flashlights and have “It” try to tag them without the aid of auxiliary light sources.
Flashlight Limbo: Have two players face each other with their flashlights turned on. The lights should create a steady beam for other players to limbo under. Players are eliminated if their bodies hit the beam of light.
Museum After Dark: To play, select a player to be the “museum guide.” The guide is given a flashlight while the rest of the players spread out in a designated area. Once each player finds a spot, he or she must strike a pose like a piece of art. The museum guide then shines his flashlight on the “art” and tries to make it move or laugh without touching it. If the piece of “art” moves any part of its body he or she becomes the new museum guide.
