Fun Spring Festivals for Families

The sun is shining (well, it is somewhere in the world), the temperatures are rising and the days are getting longer. Spring is definitely on its way. While the economy may be putting the brakes on your plans to jet off to see the tulips blossom in the Netherlands, the news is not all bad.

You don’t have to spend your child’s spring break in front of the TV. Rather, gather the clan and soak up the sun and fresh air at one of the many family-friendly festivals taking place around the United States this spring.

CALIFORNIA

You don’t have to love guacamole to enjoy the activities at this year’s Avocado Festival in Fallbrook, California. On April 19th you can witness some of the world’s finest avocado specimens during the annual event. More than 20 varieties of avocadoes will be on display. In addition, you can try avocado tamales, avocado gelato, and even deep-fried avocados. Your children will have a blast taking part in pit putting (it’s like miniature golf with avocado pits), pit spitting, and the kids-only Avo 500 quasi-soap box derby. Bonus: On the way out you can buy an avocado tree to take home.

If avocados are not your thing, then head to Stockton, California this spring for the annual Asparagus Festival, set for April 24-26th. The 3-day event celebrates all things asparagus with live music, celebrity-cooking demos, and animal shows. You can also sample some unique asparagus dishes including asparagus burritos, tri-tip and asparagus sandwiches and tempura-fried-asparagus. Other highlights include sea lion encounters and the Amazing Skyy Dogs canine show.

LOUISIANA

My daughter’s dream is to one day be crowned as queen of the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival, but for now we’ll settle for sampling our way through the event. The annual spring festival takes place from April 3-5 in this small town 30 miles east of Baton Rouge. The event includes a parade, live music, carnival rides and food booths offering dozens of strawberry-inspired dishes, including the ever-popular deep-fried strawberries showered with powdered sugar.
