Do your children know what their voices sound like? Break out the tape recorder for some creative fun. Let them tape themselves talking and being silly. Play it back for their amazement. Tape their softest whisper and their loudest scream. Tape them singing a favorite song, or reading a book out loud. Have them imitate animal sounds. Be sure and tape their laughter. Once they’ve exhausted their voices by singing, and talking, and making strange noises, there is still a lot of fun to be had.
Let the kids tape mystery noises for other people to guess. It’s really fun to go around the house and tape sounds. You can demonstrate a few to get them started. Tape the sound of car keys falling to the floor, the ice maker gurgling, the refrigerator shutting, the printer spitting out papers, a ball bouncing, and the washing machine on spin cycle. Kids can also tape someone brushing their teeth, running a finger along a comb, or jingling change in their pocket. Try crumpling paper or a plastic bag, shaking a coin jar, clicking a pen, and rolling a pencil across a table. The possibilities are endless. Some of the sounds are very hard to guess.
You can also challenge the kids to add sound effects to a story or a puppet show. They will have fun looking around the house for something that sounds like a squeaky door, thunder, or footsteps.
We focus so much on visual things in our society. Having a record of what your children sounded like singing and laughing is something to treasure forever.
Besides, it’s fun to give their ears a challenge. It’s also fun to watch the kids catch on to listening intently, and noticing sounds. And who doesn’t wish their kids listened more?
