Fun with Boxes

Children love boxes. Check out these fun ideas that you and your little ones can make from boxes.

Toy Refrigerator

A box about 2′ long and 1′ wide makes a perfect toy refrigerator when set on one end. Remove the short flaps, and use the long flaps for doors on your new side by side toy fridge. For extra fun, cut a square hole in one door to make an ice dispenser. If you can find a small, open box, cut the hole to fit it and place the box in the hole. Secure it from the inside with packing tape or duct tape. Next, tape the short flaps inside as shelves. Another small box can be set inside the bottom of the toy refrigerator as a crisper. Paint if desired.

Toy Stove

A square box, turned upside down, makes a great stove. Cut the front about 1″ down from the top edge, and cut a slit down each side about an 1″ from each edge. This will make an oven door. Paint if desired. Glue strips of cardboard together to form a frame. Place plastic wrap inside the frame before attaching. This will be the window on the oven door. Next, criss-cross black pipe cleaners to create 3-D burners. Glue them in place, and when dry, start cooking.

Toy Kitchen Sink

If you have a box the same size as the one you used for a toy fridge, use it for a kitchen sink and counter. Place the box with the top facing down. Find a small, shallow box that covers about half the top of the box. Trace the smaller box onto the larger one. When you cut it out, stay inside the tracing line. Place the smaller box inside the hole. Turn the large box over and secure the smaller one in place with packing tape or duct tape.
