It’s the holiday tradition that takes a lickin’, but keeps on tickin’. Actually, I know several people who wouldn’t put their tongues anyway near fruitcake, yet that doesn’t seem to diminish its role as a Christmas stalwart.
Regardless of the fact that it remains the butt of countless jokes and no matter how many people toss it out as soon they get it, the Christmas fruitcake keeps coming back year after year (and in some cases it’s the same one making the rounds).
Many fruitcake recipients are under the impression that the holiday dessert has no expiration. That it can sit on the shelf forever and still be served in case of emergency. That nothing and no one can beat down the solid mass of candied fruit. Of course, none of those assumptions are true, but you have to give the fruitcake credit for withstanding the taunts year after year, after year, after year.
Given all that has been hurled at the holiday treat it should come as no surprise that someone came up with the idea to create a version that could really live in perpetuity.
All hail the inflatable fruitcake.
No kidding. Someone actually came up with the idea to create an everlasting fruitcake.
Why buy gourmet or spend hours in the kitchen making a treat that no one will eat? The inflatable version is much easier (not to mention cheaper) to mail to family and friends since it fits perfectly in an envelope. And as the website says: “Nobody eats them anyway, they’re reusable and regiftable, non-toxic (unlike fruitcake), always fresh, and leaves no crumbs.”
How can you say no to that sales pitch?
I know a few friends who would get a kick out of the fake cake. On the other hand I also have a few great-aunts who actually spend days slaving away in their kitchens making the traditional holiday treat. I doubt they would be amused by the gag gift. Of course, I’m sure they would be even more offended if they knew where their fruitcakes really ended up on December 26th.
Would you buy an inflatable fruitcake?
