In a previous post I detailed the drama I went through finding affordable goodies to stuff into the party bags we gave away at my daughter’s birthday celebration.
As a parent, I am keenly aware that most kiddie party goodie bags are loaded with cheap crap that simply collects dust or breaks within minutes of being unwrapped. That said, if you have the time and money, there are a plethora of ways you can have fun filling swag bags.
One of the easiest ways to facilitate fun is to carry the theme of your child’s party to the favors. You don’t have to match the items exactly to the cake and decorations, but you can use the theme for inspiration. For example, if you are having a pool party, send each child home with a small sand pail filled with a mini shovel, some inexpensive flip-flops, plastic sunglasses and Moon Sand. For a party with a craft theme, you could fill party bags with mini wood bead kits, foam letters, little birdhouse craft kits or a pencil pouch that contains markers, a glue stick and scissors.
If you have the means, I would bypass the plastic stuff and candy and send kids home with something they can really use—-books. Reading material may not sound like a fun favor, but if you exercise some creativity and match the titles with your child’s party theme, you’ll find that most kids will be thrilled with the gift. For instance, if your son or daughter is having a pirate-themed party, then pack a copy of Treasure Island in the goodie bags. If you are hosting a tea party, then give each guest a copy of Alice in Wonderland. Finally, if you are throwing your daughter a princess party, consider adding Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White or any other favorite princess fairy tale to the party swag bag.
