“Families are like fudge – mostly sweet with a few nuts.” That quote was front and center on a hilarious scrapbook layout, which was displayed at a crop I attended a few weeks ago.
Not every clan is like the Waltons. In fact, I would venture to guess that more families have their roots in reality TV shows, or at the very least, have closer ties to the Simpsons or the Brady Bunch than the Cleavers and Nelsons.
Whether your family life is more like a sitcom than a sappy greeting card, there’s no reason not to document it in funny page designs. Leave the stuffy layouts for baptism, wedding or retirement albums and pepper your scrapbook with comical photos, embellishments and mementos. Don’t forget to share the joke with readers by journaling about why the photo subjects are cracking up. You could also add some amusing quotes to the layout, such as:
“Family: A social unit where the father is concerned with parking space, the children with outer space, and the mother with closet space.”–Evan Esar
“If you cannot get rid of the family skeleton, you may as well make it dance.”–George Bernard Shaw
“I looked up my family tree and found out I was the sap.”–Rodney Dangerfield
If you don’t want to use other people’s humor, then document some of your own. After all, kids say the darndest things, and you will be remiss if you don’t include some of your offspring’s verbal gems in your memory album.
Once you’ve collected a series of your kids’ funniest sayings, you can feature them in creative page designs. Just remember short phrases fit a page layout better than gigantic anecdotes. It’s best to keep quotes concise—-roughly one or two sentences. The phrases can then be used along the border of a photo frame or you could place the quotes in conversation bubbles next to the photo of the person who uttered them.
