The other day I wrote about My Life as a Pets Blogger Parts I and II, but something I forgot to mention is how sometimes people pass neat stories or otherwise pet-related info my way. (Like Aimee did with an article that I referenced in Michael Vick Learns Animal Lovers Are a Force to Be Reckoned With.)
Well, Aimee’s done it again, but so have a couple of others. I’d like to share with you what they shared with me, because you might find it equally interesting.
The Michael Vick Pet Chew Toy
This one came to me again courtesy of Aimee. (Another shout of thanks out to you, Aim!)
For those who are outraged at Michael Vick over his dogfighting charges, here’s something to add levity to the situation.
A company called Red Room Entertainment (based weirdly enough in the city I’m soon moving back to, Jacksonville, FL) has produced a chew toy of Michael Vick, which is selling online predominantly at places like eBay.
The Vick Dog Chew Toy is made of state of the art “dog” material. The Vick Toy Doll is so strong and flexible, it will challenge every breed. Especially the Pit Bull. ~-Description on one eBay seller’s ad.-~
Downside: Because Vick is depicted in his NFL uniform, the toy will probably get pulled for legal reasons since it likely infringed on NFL merchandising rights.
Upside: The company said it will donate some of its profits to the Humane Society.
Check out Families.com’s Deal Section for other dog chew toy selections.
When Giant Penguins Roamed the Earth
This next one came to me courtesy of Families.com Blogger Extraordinaire Heather Long. (Thanks again, Heather!)
Did you know giant penguins standing nearly five feet tall once roamed the earth? If you’re answer was no, don’t feel bad. Scientists just recently made the discovery themselves when they found a “well-preserved skeleton” in the Department of Ica in Peru.
It’s estimated that the penguins lived 36 million years ago. Not only were they giants compared to their modern day cousins, but they also preferred living in warmer climes to colder ones. (There are a couple of species even now that have this preference, but they’re new to it –in the scheme of things. Evidence suggests their giant cousins migrated to lower latitudes much earlier than anyone had previously realized penguins had done.)
Some pretty wild stuff. Just goes to show you never know what discovery might come next about our planet and the creatures that have inhabited it.
Mobile Service for Pets (and Their People) on the Go
This next one came to me from Families.com member PetsaretheBest. (Even though you signed off your PM to me with your first name, I don’t know if you want it revealed to all since it’s not on your profile. Suffice it to say I will keep your identity protected, Kind Reader, whilst I bid you “Merci!” once again for taking the time to bring this to my attention.)
Purina has teamed with a company called go2 to create go2Pets.com. If you have a cell phone you go to their site, punch in your cell number and carrier (or text “pets” to 462411), and they’ll send the link to your phone. Then you just enter your zip code to find all manner of pet related info such as:
• Purina Pet Tips (including dog and cat behavior, training, and walking tips)
• Pet Photos and Fun (including pet names and pet jokes)
• Activities with Pets (including camping spots, pet friendly dining, even wineries!)
• Animal Travel (including airline policies and friendly hotels)
• Beaches and Off-Leash Parks
• Pet Directory (including shelters, dog walkers, hospitals, kennels and pet shops)
• Hotlines
• Weather
Very cool stuff.
Always Looking for More
This was all great (and greatly appreciated) info and fun stuff passed along to me to share with you. If you happen to have anything you’d like to see in a blog, I’m just a PM away. I look forward to hearing from you!
