We are all faced with a conflict once in awhile, or unforeseen event that prevents us from following through with plans. Sometimes it is out of our control, like the weather. And sometimes it is as simple as someone getting sick or an appointment being scheduled that simply cannot be changed.
A rainy day will prevent a garage sale from bringing in sales from most people. And a bitter cold day can also prevent someone from coming out into the cold, rather than staying in the warmth of their home.
If you advertise your sale in the paper or around town, be sure to schedule an alternative rain date, and include it in the ad. Of course this does not mean that a few die hard garage sale people will not surface on your lawn at some point, but it does mean that most will attend the rain date sale.
Scheduling an alternative day or weekend is a great idea even if it isn’t raining. If something else comes up, you are almost covered. You can’t just leave it at that though, because nobody can read your mind. If you advertise a sale in the paper and then something comes up, other than weather, people will be at your house for the sale, and you won’t be there. That is not good business.
If something does come up, create a sign for your yard or to post on the garage door, that says the date of the rescheduled sale. This is a great time to include photographs of your sale items or to more specifically list what you are selling. It will bring people back on the scheduled date.
Most people will understand that things come up, and emergencies happen, and things can prevent us from doing activities that we have planned. They are going to be a lot more understanding if you take preventative measures to be sure that they are only inconvenienced a little.
And one last piece of advice: If you know you will not be having the sale on that day, and you have rescheduled the sale, remove any signs you have around town that indicates the current date and directions to your home. You can replace these signs when the new date arrives.
