As a single mom money is tight. Kids grow out of their clothes faster than you can blink some days and you find yourself scrounging for ways to make them last just a little bit longer. But you don’t want your child going out in public looking like a hooligan so you head out to the dreaded neighborhood garage sale.
I’ve never been a big fan of garage sales. Have you ever taken a toddler to a garage sale before? Now you probably understand why. They have sticky little fingers and tend to grab everything they can get their little hands on. When they’re not grabbing the loot, they’re running as fast as they can knocking things over as you chase them away from the other cars on the road. Embarrassing doesn’t even begin to describe it! But when you are a single mom sometimes you don’t have any other choice, so you stick it out to see what you can find.
When searching garage sales remember that it takes time. It is hit and miss. Not everybody is going to have what you are looking for and it may take some hunting to find what your child needs. You may have to try a couple of different garage sales before you find just the right things. Try going to the higher end of town. They often have high quality clothes and accessories for only a couple of dollars. I’ve even found some things with the tags still on them!
It is also important to start early. The good stuff goes fast! The earlier you get there the better chance you are going to find what you are looking for and the less time you have to waste searching.
You may not be able to find everything your child needs at a garage sale, but if you know where to look it just might save you an arm and a leg!
