Garage Sales and Yard Sales

Having a garage sale or a yard sale is a great way to make a little extra money. You can sell things you no longer use and get back some of the money you spent to purchase these items. Not only that, but having a garage sale is also a great way to make more room in your home or garage. Sort through everything and get rid of stuff you don’t want or need.

In order to make the most of your garage sale or yard sale, presentation is important. Make sure each item is clean, properly assembled, and displayed in a way that makes it attractive to shoppers. Group like items together.

For example, clothes should all be in one section. Go even further and separate children’s clothing from adult clothes, and boys from girls. Clothing should be clean and pressed if necessary. It’s best to hang items on hangers, but if you don’t have enough hangers be sure to fold clothes neatly. You are likely to get more for each item if clothing is displayed this way than you would if you just threw a bunch of shirts in a box.

House wares, accessories, tools, small appliances, and other items should be sorted and displayed accordingly. It is also a good idea to cover tables with a cloth for a better appearance. You can use a piece of fabric or even a sheet in place of a tablecloth.

Make sure you have plenty of change, and keep all money in a closed container. Never leave money unattended, and be leery of taking checks unless you know the person well. Also, remember that you should claim all income on your tax return, even if it’s just a few hundred dollars from a garage sale or yard sale. Writing in the amount under “other income” should be sufficient, but you may want to check with a tax professional.
