Gardening For Dummies

Yep, you read it here. Welcome to Gardening for Dummies. Yes, I know that’s a copyrighted book title. I own it – the book, not the copyright. You see, the book was written for people like. People who would LOVE to have that beautiful landscaped garden and are absolutely clueless on how to get one.

I was just discussing the need to get outside over in the Fitness blog where I normally write and as I need to get outside, one of my goals for this spring is to clear, plant and cultivate a garden. I had a modicum of success with roses last year (until one of my dogs dug up one of the bushes, but two of the three rose bushes survived.). So I’m ready to give a larger project my attention.

My daughter is excited about the prospect of planting our own garden. We’re going to grow flowers (although she suggested vegetables, I don’t think I am willing to eat anything I grow yet.).

So the first order of business is to decide what type of flowers?

That’s easy. We’re going to plant Zinnias. Zinnias are her favorite type of flower and they come in lots of colors. They are also extremely hardy (which they need to be) and do well in my type of soil (another plus in my direction.)

So we know what we want to plant. The next question is where to plant it?

We have a very nice side yard that our dogs can’t get into which means they can’t dig up the plants. We’re going to clear a six foot area, by turning the grass over a couple of times and then adding some gardening soil to help properly add nutrients to the soil.

Then we follow the instructions on the seed packages.

Yep and our trusty gardening reference guide that we picked up – we’re going to start at the end of this week as the temperatures are starting to warm up. Wish me luck – I figure if the garden grows it’ll be because my daughter has the most important job: planting the seeds!
