Gather the Troops: Get Outside and Clean Up With Your Soldiers

Ah, single parenthood! So much work with so little time. Double the effort, double the load, but it must be done. Spring has arrived and if there is one thing that bothers me is looking out the window at all that needs to be done. In fact, it is weighing on my mind today. As I was brewing yet another pot of coffee, I looked out my kitchen window that gives me a clear view of my back yard. Ugh, is all that I can say. There are leaves that need to be picked up. Oh, I tried in the fall, but up here in the North the snow fell before the leaves did. I have told myself that this upcoming weekend it has to be worked on. I do not have time, but I will have to create the time by putting other things aside at least for a few hours.

This is the time you have to call on the kids for assistance. When you are a single parent you have to use your kids. Do I think it is fair? Yes, it teaches them good things such as hard work, responsibility, and the feeling of a job well done. It matures them in ways that are good for them. It gives them a feeling of usefulness. We all need that even children.

Announce during the week that Saturday is yard clean up day. All will help because as it says, “Many hands make light work.” The older children can take on more strenuous work such as raking and bagging the leaves. The younger children can pick up stray twigs and small rocks. They can all help you lug the debris down to the curb. When you are all done take them inside, have them clean up, and enjoy a well-earned pizza and movie together. Kids actually will enjoy this time together and most will be eager to help as it gives them a feeling of importance and togetherness.
