Gathered Baby Quilt

This is not a full blown quilt tutorial, there isn’t room for that. I will mainly focus on a cute little technique I found that makes unique quilts and touch on the construction. If you know how to make a quilt already, this is for you. If you are brave enough to muddle through then it’s for you as well.

The materials will depend on the size of quilt you are making. I made a baby quilt using 12 squares. The squares are 10×10 when finished. You can make this larger, just adjust what you need.

Each yard of fabric will give you six rectangles that will become your squares. Cut rectangles 10 ½” x 21”. Once your squares are cut use the longest stitch on your machine to run a line of stitching across each long side. Leave long threads, do not backstitch at the beginning or end.

You will need another material, muslin works great. Cut this into 10 ½ inch squares. Cut as many as you need for your quilt top.

Gather the rectangles to fit the squares, pin in place, right side up. Stitch the rectangles to the squares. Once you have completed them all, figure out the design for your quilt top. I alternated the direction the gathers were going but you could put them all one way. This would be cute made out of one material with the gathers alternated.

Sew your squares together.

Cut your batting just a little smaller than the quilt top and backing fabric the same size as the quilt top. I simply folded the edges of the front and back under, pinned and stitched. I choose a really soft micro fiber for the back since it will be wrapped around a baby.

After the back and front are stitched together I simply stitched down the lines between the squares.

Quick, easy and oh so cute!
