Geico Insurance “Cavemen” To Become ABC Sitcom

Entertainment reporters and Hollywood watchers seem to have mixed reviews about ABC TV Studio’s decision to create a television comedy sitcom featuring Geico advertising characters. The Caveman series will be based on the personalities created for the recent campaign pressing the fact that Geico Insurance is so simple to sign up for that, “Even a Caveman can do it.”

It won’t be the first time a commercial character has grown into a television series idea. Some critics think “Caveman” will turn out the same as all the past. Many of the past TV shows that have been produced based on commercial characters failed miserably. During the 80’s the “Where’s The Beef” lady was featured in a television program. I don’t recall the name of the program, but will never forget the commercial campaign. It seems to be the case for many television commercial characters who continue to be seen in the 30-second ads years after the shows they were featured in have been canceled. Remember “ALF”–who continues to be seen in advertising today decades after the sitcom was canceled.

Most recently CBS comedy “Baby Bob” aired in 2002, and was based on the talking baby character first seen on a series of dot.com advertisements. When CBS canceled “Baby Bob,” his character went on to be seen in a series of Quizno’s Subs commercials.

The information I have found says that the “Cavemen” sitcom will feature three prehistoric men (Cavemen) who face constant prejudice living daily life in modern Atlanta Georgia.

Joe Lawson, the same advertising copywriter behind the Geico ad’s for “Caveman” as well as many other Geico commercials such as the one featuring the Geico gecko, will continue to write for the television sitcom. The executive producers are Daniel Rappaport, Guymon Cassady, Will Speck and Josh Gordon.

The pilot will be based on the same Geico ad ideas used to encourage consumers to try the user-friendly insurance company Web site. Even “a caveman could do it.” These commercials have been airing for some time now, and focus on cavemen living in modern era and dealing with the offensive and demeaning Geico commercial slogan. One of my personal favorites is when the Geico company representatives take the cavemen to dinner in an effort to apologize.

It’s hard to miss the Geico commercials if you watch any television at all. Some of the other topics of the cavemen ads include an annoyed and upset, modern cavemen irritated when he has to hear or read the offensive commercial slogan during the course of everyday life.

The Caveman commercial advertising is created by Martin Agency located in Richmond, Va. It hasn’t been announced at this point if the current commercial actors Jeff Daniel Phillips and Ben Weber will move forward and play roles as Cavemen for the new ABC Television sitcom.

Cavemen may or may not be a big hit, but I will be interested in watching just to see how it goes. I’m sure Geico will run advertising during the program but, I hope they use the cute little talking Gecko for the ad spots, actually I would have rather ABC made a sitcom around the Gecko because I think he is so darling, or even the nasty little squirrels who enjoy causing accidents may have been more interesting to me. Perhaps, that’s because the Cavemen remind me a lot of the Planet of The Apes, so it doesn’t seem that fresh to me!
