General Conference: “A Lesson from the Book of Mormon”

In her talk “A Lesson from the Book of Mormon” Sister Vicki F Matsumori speaks specifically to the first generation members of the church. She relates the story of the people of Ammon and how they passed the gospel on to future generations. Sister Matsumori talks about three specific tools that each member can utilize to help learn the gospel and pass it on to the next generation.

The first tool Sister Matsumori discusses is studying the scriptures. It is an important way to learn more about the gospel. Although it may seem difficult to study your scriptures at first it does become easier. The more you read the stronger your testimony will grow. You can feel the love of the Savior as you read.

Prayer is the second tool you should utilize to build your faith. Sister Matsumori shares the story of one young investigator. He was struggling with criticism and opposition from others, but as he prayed, he felt the Lord’s love and knew he needed to be baptized.

She speaks specifically of the covenant of baptism, but she also refers to covenant that the people of Ammon made when they joined the church. She emphasizes that keeping the baptismal covenant allows you to have the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost.

Sister Matsumori ends her talk on a personal note. She shares her story of being baptized into the church, before her parents were. She speaks of how much good her parents taught her and how they supported her even though they were not members of the church. She ends by challenging the new members to pass the gospel on to future generations.

This is a great talk. It gives good advice and insight into being a new member. Additionally the principles she talks about can help any member gain a stronger testimony. I hope that you take the time to read this talk and apply it to your life.
