In his talk “A Royal Priesthood” President James E Faust speaks primarily to the young men about the importance and sacredness of the priesthood. He shares a story of deacons who were not taking their priesthood duties seriously. Their advisor informed them that they would not be needed to pass the Sacrament the next Sunday. The deacons were surprised to see the High Priests passing the Sacrament. They were dressed in suits and ties, and performed the duty with reverence and respect. The boys were able to learn through example the sacredness of their duties.
President Faust speaks of the different duties of the different quorums in the Aaronic Priesthood. He says:
“The Doctrine and Covenants describes different kinds of authority relating to the Aaronic Priesthood. First, ordination to the priesthood gives authority to perform the ordinances and possess the power of the Aaronic Priesthood. The bishopric is the presidency of the Aaronic Priesthood in the ward. Second, within this priesthood are different offices, each with different responsibilities and privileges. As a deacon, you are to watch over the Church as a standing minister. As a teacher, in addition to watching over the Church, you are to ‘be with and strengthen them.’ As a priest, you are ‘to preach, teach, expound, exhort, and baptize, and administer the sacrament, and visit the house of each member.’ Your bishop, who holds the office of high priest, is also the president of the priests quorum and directs the work of the quorum.”
President Faust counsels the young men to stay away from any addicting behavior and to stay true to the duties with which they have been entrusted. He also speaks of the importance of home teaching. He also counsels the young men to strive to always have the spirit to be with them.
This is a wonderful talk and I hope that you will take the time to read it. If you have young men, you could use it as a basis for a family home evening lesson, or as a starting point for a discussion on the sacred responsibilities that accompany the priesthood.
