In his talk “Daughters of God” Elder M Russell Ballard speaks about the role and importance of women. He opens his talk by sharing his appreciation for all that his wife does. He had the opportunity to realize it as he took over some duties when his wife had back surgery. He also shares an experience when he sat along with his small children in church one Sunday many years ago.
Elder Ballard says that he is impressed by the many mothers that he sees. He points out that there is not just one way to be a good mother. He points out that no matter what your situation (whether you stay at home, work at home or outside the home) what matters is how much you love your children, and how you prioritize your life.
Elder Ballard then speaks of the difficulties that accompany being a mother. It can be difficult to consistently put the children first. Mothers often do not receive appreciation for the choices that they have made.
Elder Ballard address some things that mothers can do to reduce the pressure and enjoy your family more. He points out to enjoy the moments that are joyful. It is important to live in the moment. He also stresses the importance of not over scheduling yourself, but to give you and your family time to do the things you need to play together as a family. Then Elder Ballard stresses the importance of mothers having some time for themselves. And finally he stresses the importance of studying and teaching the gospel to your children.
Elder Ballard goes on to suggest ways that a husband can support his wife as a mother. He suggests that they express appreciation every day. He also suggests talking to your wife about your children. He suggests that husband’s give their wives a break every so often. And finally he stresses the importance of taking an active part in raising your children.
Elder Ballard also stresses the importance of children helping out and showing gratitude to their mothers. He also suggests that wards should be careful of the demands that they put on young mothers time when they call them to serve in the church. He closes by expressing his love for all the sisters in the church.
This is a wonderful talk. I remember the peace I felt as I first heard these words, and I have taken the time to apply them to my family, and I feel blessed for doing so. I challenge you to read these words, and evaluate how they may apply to your life, and then do the things you feel should.
