General Conference: “Life’s Lessons Learned”

In his talk “Life’s Lessons Learned” Elder Joseph B Wirthlin shares experiences that he had as a young man that helped him to develop into who he is today. He speaks of these experiences to illustrate the many different experiences can affect who you become in the long run.

Elder Wirthlin begins with a story of when he was on the high school football team. The linebacker who was blocking him was huge, and he made Elder Wirthlin nervous. Just before the end of the first half Elder Wirthlin dropped the ball. At half time his coach yelled at him over it. Elder Wirthlin resolved to do better, and he ended up catching the winning touchdown for the game. The coach gave him some great praise that stuck with him for awhile. Elder Wirthlin says:

“I have known many great men and women. Although they have different backgrounds, talents, and perspectives, they all have this in common: they work diligently and persistently towards achieving their goals. It’s easy to get distracted and lose focus on the things that are most important in life. I’ve tried to remember the lessons I learned from Coach Oswald and prioritize values that are important to me so that I can keep my eye focused on things that really matter.

“I urge you to examine your life. Determine where you are and what you need to do to be the kind of person you want to be. Create inspiring, noble, and righteous goals that fire your imagination and create excitement in your heart. And then keep your eye on them. Work consistently towards achieving them.”

Elder Wirthlin goes on to speak of another moment when he was playing football. This particular game was for the championship, and they were one touchdown short of winning. Elder Wirthlin was given the ball to drive it in. He was tackled and at the bottom of the pile. He wondered if he had made it in, and reached out to feel that he was just two inches away. He realized that he could move the ball and no one would know, and they would win the game. He remembered that his mother had taught him to be honest, and so he didn’t move the ball. Looking back at this even Elder Wirthlin said that it was a defining moment for him. He urges us to avoid temptation as well.

Elder Wirthlin goes on to speak about the importance of service and the Priesthood. He speaks of Bishop William F. Perschon who taught the Aaronic priesthood in his ward the importance of service. He left a lasting influence on the youth. Elder Wirthlin also speaks of the importance of developing an obedient spirit and following the counsel of the church leaders.

This is a wonderful talk. Elder Wirthlin talks about several points that are important to develop in our character. It is important that we each work towards worthy goals, that we remain honest and serve others. Obedience leads to lasting happiness. I hope that you will take the time to read this wonderful talk.
