General Conference: “Opening Our Hearts”

In his talk “Opening Our Hearts” Elder Gerald N. Lund is speaking about the Holy Ghost. He talks about receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost after baptism, and the way that it can help to guide our lives. It is important to have the companionship of the Holy Ghost in order to have peace in our lives.

Elder Lund emphasizes the ways that the Holy Ghost communicates with us. It speaks to our spirits. It is a quiet voice that whispers in our hearts and our minds. Elder Lund points out that our hearts are where we feel things, and that our hearts are a reflection of our spirituality. He makes a good analogy about our hearts being welcoming to others when we are living righteously, just like a picket fence, or it being closed off to others like a chain link face topped with wire.

Elder Lund points out that we choose how open our hearts are to the promptings of the Holy Ghost. Heavenly Father will not take away our agency in this. It is important to live in a way that our hearts are opened to the promptings of the spirit. Elder Lund warns against sin and pride when it comes to allowing the Holy Ghost to speak to our hearts.

This is an excellent talk. I think it is important to truly open our hearts to the Holy Ghost, and the best way to do this is to live the gospel more fully each day. Elder Lund points out the things that we should be careful of when it comes to closing our hearts to the spirit. It is too easy to set our heart upon the wrong things, and not focus on the gospel. As we listen to the promptings of the Holy Ghost we can make better choices. If we stop hearing the promptings it is a good time evaluate those choices again. I hope that you will take the time to read and ponder this talk.
