In his talk “Prayer, Faith and Family: Stepping-Stones to Eternal Happiness” Elder Bruce H Stucki talks about the importance of praying with faith and focusing on the family to achieve eternal happiness. He shares several stories, which illustrate the points that he is making.
Elder Stucki begins his talks by sharing an experience he had as a young boy. He had received a bow and arrow set for Christmas, and during his first outing with the set he lost his first arrow. He looked for it for over half an hour. It was getting dark, and he knew he had to go home. He knelt down and prayed, when he opened his eyes, he could see the arrow. He knew that the Lord had answered his prayers.
Next Elder Stucki shared the story of an inexperienced young doctor who needed to perform brain surgery in order to save a young patient’s life. They were in a rural area, and the facilities were lacking. Many people prayed for the success of the surgery, including the young doctor. He spoke to a neurosurgeon several times over the phone, seeking guidance for the surgery. Then the doctor had the faith to proceed. The young boy is now grown with no ill effects.
Finally Elder Stucki spoke about the importance of family. He said:
“I sincerely believe that in the sanctity of the family our love, loyalty, respect, and support for each other can become the sacred shield that will protect us from the fiery darts of the devil. In the family circle, filled with the love of Christ, we will be able to find peace, happiness, and protection from the wickedness of the world that surrounds us.”
Elder Stucki goes on to speak about the importance of family in the next life. He shares a quote about families and their divine nature and purpose. It is important to focus on the family.
This is a wonderful talk, which outlines three basic things that we need to focus on as we continue throughout this life. As I think about the counsel he gives, I find that as I am praying with faith and focusing on helping my family, that I do feel closer to my Heavenly Father, and it is easier to get through the roadblocks in my way. I hope that you will take the time to read and ponder this wonderful talk.
