In his talk “Salt Lake Tabernacle Dedication” President James E Faust speaks of the events leading up to the building of the tabernacle. He points out that only two buildings that were built for worship up to that point were the Kirtland and Nauvoo temples. He goes on to say that the one church building they did build was also used as a schoolhouse.
President Faust speaks of the meetings that the saints had in Nauvoo and Kirtland. They were held outside and often inclement weather would interrupt them. However the saints would stay and listen to Joseph Smith despite the rain and the discomfort.
President Faust also shares that the Saints had planned on building a tabernacle made out of canvas in Nauvoo. It was to hold close to eight thousand people. However, the persecution intensified and the saints had to leave before they could finish constructing it.
President Faust that Brigham Young was able to fulfill Joseph Smith’s wishes when he built the tabernacle. President Faust goes on to point out that the church is still meeting the needs of bringing the message to the world through radio, satellite and Internet broadcasts. He emphasizes that it is through inspiration that they are able to do this.
This talk was interesting, because I had never heard of the plans for the canvas tabernacle in Nauvoo. It is amazing to think of all those who sacrificed to build the tabernacle. The saints faced tremendous opposition until they settled in Utah. It is a wonderful building that can symbolize the safety of the saints
I hope that you will take the time to read this talk as well as the other talks about the tabernacle. It was nice to be able to see the rededication of such a historic building. If you ever have the opportunity to visit Utah you should make time to see this unique building.
