In his talk “The Great Commandment” Elder Joseph B Wirthlin speaks about the one thing that sets apart from others. He begins by sharing the account of Paul writing to the Corinthians and urging them to develop charity for each other. He goes on to speak of the Christ’s answer to the Pharisees when they asked what the greatest commandment was. Christ replied to love the Lord with all your heart, and to love your neighbors as yourself.
Elder Wirthlin speaks about Joseph Smith who taught: “A man filled with the love of God, is not content with blessing his family alone, but ranges through the whole world, anxious to bless the whole human race.” Elder Wirthlin then shares the story of when Joseph Smith gave shelter to a boy who was looking for his brother, and had a long journey ahead of him. He also arranged a ride for the rest of the boy’s journey.
Elder Wirthlin then relates the story of an elderly couple. The wife lost her sight due to age and the husband began to paint her fingernails for her. Elder Wirthlin points out that it is love like this that can transform us. It helps us to forgive others, and to be less judgmental.
Elder Wirthlin then asks us if we love the Lord. He then lists activities that we each should be doing if we truly love the Lord. These include reading the scriptures and obeying the commandments. He points out that this love is what helps us to transform and become purified. When we stand before the judgement seat, it will be the acts of love and kindness that the Lord will be interested in.
This is a wonderful talk. I enjoyed reading the scriptures that spoke about the importance of love. I also began to think about the ways that I can demonstrate my love to the Savior. It is vital that we reach out and help those around us in love. I hope that you will take the time to read this beautiful talk.
