In his talk “The Healing Power of Forgiveness” President James E Faust spoke about how forgiving others helps to you heals you more completely. President Faust begins his talk by sharing a story of the Amish people. A man went and attacked one of their schools injuring and killing several. The Amish freely forgave him, and even gave some of the money that people sent them to his family. He points out that this forgiveness is an example to all of us.
President Faust points out that it can be difficult to forgive people right away. He acknowledges that some people hold grudges for a long time. He teaches that it is through a deep faith in the Lord that you are able to forgive others. When you are faced with great trials, you can learn from them. Ultimately they can bring you closer to the Lord as you strive for the peace that only He can bring.
President Faust points out that the Lord requires us to forgive all men. It is important to keep our hearts open to forgiveness. If you are praying and seeking to be able to forgive, it will come with time. Although it may be difficult it will bring you a greater sense of peace.
President Faust shares the story of the Christensen family. Their son was intentionally killed by a bomb. The family struggled with the press hounding them. When the father realized that the only way they could have peace was to forgive. President Faust then shares the stories of two families who made the decision to forgive after their family members were killed in automobile accidents.
President Faust ends his talk by encouraging those struggling to forgive to make it a matter of prayer. He points out that forgiveness does not take away the consequences that someone may have as a result of his actions. However it is still important to let go of those negative feelings that you may have.
This is a wonderful talk. Forgiveness really is a blessing that the Lord has given us through the Atonement. Forgiveness can helps us to find peace in situations that we may never be able to otherwise. If you are having a difficult time forgiving someone pray and then you may want to talk to your bishop who may be able to help you understand the process better.
