General Conference: “The Spirit of the Tabernacle”

In his talk “The Spirit of the Tabernacle” President James E Faust talks about the many events that have occurred in the Tabernacle. The Saturday afternoon session of conference was also the rededication of the Tabernacle. It recently was renovated to make it safer.

President Faust begins by sharing an experience he had shortly after being called to be an apostle. He was attending the Primary General Conference, when the children sang “Reverently, Quietly.” The spirit came to him and he knew that everything would be all right in his ministry.

President Faust then shares the story of Elder LeGrand Richards (who served as an apostle). Elder Richards came to the Tabernacle as a boy and heard President Wilford Woodruff teach. The confirmation of the spirit spoke strongly to Elder Richards. He carried that moment with him until he died at age ninety-six.

President Faust then goes on to speak about the many announcements that have been made from the pulpit of the Tabernacle. Each President of the church, except for Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, were first sustained in the Tabernacle. He speaks of the Holy Ghost bearing witness in the hearts of those who heard the teachings of the prophets.

President Faust then speaks a little bit about the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. He speaks of their mission and recognition. He speaks a little of their broadcasts and the music that they sing. President Faust points out that the choir helped the Tabernacle to become known throughout the world.

This is a wonderful talk. It talks about several important events in church history. It also conveys the special feeling of reverence that is in the Tabernacle. I have visited the Tabernacle several times in my life, and I am looking forward to seeing the renovations. I hope that you will read the talk and learn a little bit about its history.
