George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis Split

Years ago, Nicole Kidman bet George Clooney $10,000 that he would be married by the time he was 40. Not only did Clooney pass that milestone, but he just celebrated his 50th birthday – still looking good, still not married.

And now, he is officially single once again. Clooney and his lady love of the past two years, Italian actress and model Elisabetta Canalis announced they have split. In a joint statement, the two said, “We are not together anymore. It’s very difficult and very personal, and we hope everyone can respect our privacy.”

The two were recently seen dining in Italy and celebrated Clooney’s 50th birthday together in May, but I knew it had to be splitsville for the couple a few weeks ago when I read an interview by Canalis, in which she said that she knew she would be a bride someday.

Rumors of a split between Clooney and Canalis surfaced last month, but I wonder if it was that “bride” interview that finally made Clooney put on his walking shoes. After all, the once married actor (to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 till 1993) has left many a beauty behind him on his way to eternal bachelorhood.

He dated British model Lisa Snowdon on and off for five years, then he dated cocktail waitress Sarah Larson for a year. He dated Kelly Preston (who also dated Charlie Sheen and went on to marry John Travolta) for two years in the late ‘80s and lived with model Celine Balitran for three years in the late ‘90s. In between, there were actresses Renee Zellweger, Krista Allen, and Mariella Frostup as well as television personality Karen “Duff” Duffy.

So the lesson to be learned is that yes ladies, George Clooney is incredibly handsome and charming, but if you want to be on his arm, it has to be without an engagement ring on your finger.
