We all know May is the month we celebrate our dear mothers and recognize the sacrifice made by our military service men and women. But, did you know that the month of May is also the time of the year when the nation commemorates the bicycle? Yes, May is National Bike Month—and there is no better time to get your family out on two wheels to enjoy the beautiful spring weather.
The country is filled with top-rate bike trails just waiting for you to make tracks on them. Here are a few of that consistently rank as the most popular for their breath-taking scenery and wide flat surfaces:
CALIFORNIA
Griffith Park in Los Angeles–If you are looking to get in a serious workout, this may not be the trail for you. However, if you are riding with children in tow, you can’t beat this urban park. It is home to the L.A. Zoo and the Griffith Observatory. You and your kids can easily ride from the merry-go-round to the bird sanctuary on to the zoo and several playgrounds. The best loop runs along Crystal Springs Drive and Zoo Drive then takes you back along the river then to the main entrance.
UTAH
Lost Prospector Trail in Park City–Park City is known as a mountain biker’s paradise. If you are looking for a challenging ride, hit the 7-mile route called Lost Prospector. The trail provides incredible views of Wasatch Crest and a bird’s-eye view of Park City. If you are not looking to break a sweat, stick to the less-taxing 28-mile Union Pacific Rail Trail.
NORTH CAROLINA
Cape Fear River Trail in Fayetteville–Cape Fear River Trail is part of what will soon be the nation’s largest bike path—the East Coast Greenway, is a 3,000-mile-long, car-free route that will stretch from northern Maine to southern Florida when it’s completed by 2020. Cape Fear River Trail offers 3.7-miles of hill-free paved pathways that feature wooden walkways and bluebird houses.
MASSACHUSETTS
Charles River Bike Path in Boston–Want to take a family-friendly bike ride past some of Beantown’s most historic sites? Grab your bike and pedal on the 17-mile paved Charles River Bike Path. The trail takes you by Harvard, the Museum of Science and the Charles River Esplanade. You can break up your ride by taking pit stops to watch crew teams practicing and sailors racing. The Charles River also serves as the perfect backdrop for a family picnic.
