May lightning not strike me down for writing about autumn scrapbooking in mid-August.
Sure, Halloween Express has already opened its doors for business in my neck of the woods, but that doesn’t mean I’ve got my costume picked out. I prefer to ease in and out of seasons, and for me, summer is especially hard to say goodbye to.
Still, many kids around the country have already bid adieu to days spent at the pool and park. School is back in session for students in Georgia, Hawaii and parts of California. The start of a new academic year is a major milestone for many families, and it stands to reason that the occasion would be well documented to feature in a memory album.
When it comes time to photograph your bookworms heading back to class, keep in mind the story you want told through your layouts. Resist the temptation to snap boring posed shots, and instead try to capture intimate details and candid moments that help tell a cohesive and interesting story. Also, don’t be afraid to include a number of different shots on the same layout. For example, you could feature a traditional photo of your child standing at the front door in his school uniform, and then add a couple of candid shots taken as he waits for the bus. Aim to capture emotion and the mood of the day, and then detail the adventures in journaling blocks.
One way to spice up your scrapbook pictures is to experiment with new angles. Consider squatting or bending down on your knees to take shots from your kindergartener’s perspective. Another idea is to stand on a stool and shoot your entire brood in the kitchen while they eat breakfast before the first day of school. Don’t forget to capture details of the day. Take a few photos of your child’s new shoes or his new backpack. If you can remember, consider taking a photo of the same shoes and backpack on the last day of school. Then, design a page comparing your kid’s shoes and backpack on the first day of class and the last. It’s sure to be a layout you’ll enjoy looking at for years to come.
